Advanced Searching: CINAHL (Michael)

CINAHL, the Cumulative Index to the Nursing and Allied Health Literature, is the pre-eminent database for searching the nursing and allied health literature.  This class is intended as a step beyond the basic CINAHL searching class, providing more information on CINAHL Complete.

Objectives:

  1. Understand and be able to demonstrate using the CINAHL subject headings in a search.
  2. Demonstrate the use of CINAHL subject headings scope notes and subheadings
  3. Understand and be able to demonstrate searching for Evidence Based Practice Information
  4. Understand how to use CINAHL with a Citation Manager.

 

Advanced Searching: PubMed

Take your PubMed searching to the next level!  Go in-depth with Clinical Queries, Topic-Specific Queries, Single Citation Matcher, plus more on journal subsets and how to decipher how PubMed is translating your search strategy.

Objectives:

  1. Run searches in Clinical Queries and Topic-Specific Queries.
  2. Understand how Single Citation Matcher works.
  3. Differentiate between Free Full Text, PubMed Central, and Core Clinical Journals.
  4. Effectively use the Search Details function to refine searches.

 

Business Searching for Health Professionals (Michael)

Health professionals, especially those in leadership positions, occasionally have needed to search the literature of business and administration.  Information on business and administrative topics can be found not only in business-specific databases, but also in more medically-oriented databases such as CINAHL and PubMed.  This class is designed to provide some basic search tips for health professionals on researching business topics, as well as tips on using free services, such as Google Alerts to keep up with topics of interest.

Objectives:

  1. Understand how to use PubMed and CINAHL to search for business topics.
  2. Understand the basics of using freely available business databases.
  3. Understand how to set up Google alerts to follow business topics from general media sources.

 

Complementary and Alternative Medicine: The Basics (Kelsey)

Complementary, alternative, and integrative health are popular health care approaches among Americans. Although used interchangeably, these terms all have different meanings. This class will look at the different meanings as well as identify reliable resources to use when searching for more information on complementary, alternative, or integrative health.

Objectives:

1.Define complementary, alternative, and integrative health.
2.Identify the best resources to use when searching for information on CAM.
3.Be able to locate those resources and search for CAM topics.

 

Consumer Health Information on the Internet 

Being able to locate reliable health information can help you make better health decisions. But, how do you find useful, easy to understand health information? If you use the internet, how do your know if the information you find is true and up to date? This class will you show you how to find and evaluate the best internet resources.

Objectives:

  1. Know how to find the quality health information websites such as MedlinePlus, PubMed Health.
  2. Understand the ABC’s of website evaluation.
  3. Be familiar with finding hospital and nursing home locations and quality of care data.

 

Creating Presentation Posters using PowerPoint 

Learn how to find free poster templates for PowerPoint so you can easily create a poster of any size for presenting data and ideas. This class will cover finding templates, editing the content for optimum display and taking your existing data and copying it into the poster. Creating a poster "from scratch" will also be discussed.

Objectives:

  1. Know the Location of PowerPoint Templates on Microsoft Website.
  2. Understand how to download and save PowerPoint Templates.
  3. Be familiar with editing text, adding pictures and graphs to the template.

 

Health Literacy Forum: Cynthia Bauer (SUBMITTED!)

Health Literacy Forum:
 

Health Literacy is defined as "the degree to which individuals have the capacity to obtain, process, and understand basic health information services needed to make appropriate health decisions" (Glassman, 2013). In simpler terms, it involves knowing how to find information, evaluate and use it in regards to health in everyday life. In October of 2015, the University of Tennessee Medical Center hosted a Forum on this topic. Video of the speakers make up these modules.
 

Cynthia Bauer, Keynote Speaker: (47 minutes)
"The Importance of Health Literacy and its Consequences for Patient Health."
Cynthia Bauer, PhD, is the Senior Advisor for Health Literacy and the senior official for the Plain Writing Act, Office of the Associate Director for Communication, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). She chairs the CDC Health Literacy Council and manages the agency's health literacy web site and blog. Also she was one of the developers of CDC's Clear Communication Index and CDC's online health literacy training courses for health professionals. She is a frequent speaker and teacher at professional conferences, webinars, in-person training sessions, and university courses.

  3. Identify which organization developed the “National Action Plan to Improve Health Literacy”

Health Literacy: What You Need to Know (parts 1 & 2)

This class offers a review of health literacy basics, statistics, and tips for better communication with patients (written and verbal).

Objectives:

  1. Understand the problem of health literacy in the general population, and how it is different from literacy.
  2. Demonstrate the “teach-back” technique to use with patients.
  3. Be able to assess the readability of patient handouts and understand how to make them patient-friendly.

 

Healthy Smartphone for Clinicians (Michael)

Smartphones are very powerful tools, but how does the busy health professional find useful mobile apps?  This class will cover the most popular mobile apps that are being used by medical residents and clinicians, as well as sources for finding the best mobile apps for clinicians and patients.

Objectives:

  1. Understand the most popular mobile medical apps used by medical residents and nurses at UTMC.
  2. Effectively use reliable sources to find health-related mobile apps.
  3. Develop the ability to recommend reliable health-related mobile apps for patients.

 

Introduction to Evidence Based Practice (parts 1 & 2)(Martha)

An introduction to the concept and practice of evidence based practice including background information, creation of clinical questions and tips on finding the best evidence in the literature. Class will be tailored for physicians or nurses, according to the participants.

 Objectives:

  1. Define Evidence Based Practice.
  2. Understand and be able to create clinical inquiries using the PICO format.
  3. Be familiar with searching for topics in databases used for EBP research including PubMed Medline and Cochrane.
  4. Recognize randomization, blinding, and subject accountability.

 

Introduction to Searching: CINAHL (Kelsey)  

Learn the basics of searching and exploring CINAHL, the premier nursing bibliographic database.

Objectives:

  1. Discuss key search features related to nursing.
  2. Detail step-by-step practice searches.
  3. Provide you with the opportunity to perform a search on your area of interest.

 

Introduction to Searching: PubMed (Cynthia)

PubMed is the gold standard search engine for the MEDLINE database, and it is free to access anywhere in the world.  This class will review the basics of PubMed/MEDLINE structure as well as review how to understand and filter your search results.

Objectives:

  1. Understand how searching PubMed is different than searching Google.
  2. Run a basic search using keywords and Medical Subject Headings (MeSH).
  3. Apply filters to narrow the search results based on study type, language, publication years, etc.

 

Learning Express Library (Martha)

Learning Express Library is a clearinghouse of test preparation and tutorial materials, covering everything from the most basic computer skills to Microsoft Office tutorials on Access, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, and more.  In addition, the database includes a variety of college and career test preparation resources, Spanish language materials, and other adult learning resources, including GRE, GMAT, and NCLEX.  These tools save time and money for health professionals.  This class will cover the basics of using the Learning Express Library to prepare for College Placement Exams; Graduate School Admission Exams;  Allied Health, EMT, or Nursing occupational exams;  and  Computer Basics.

Objectives:

  1. Understand how to access Learning Express Library through the Preston Medical Library website.
  2. Demonstrate how to navigate the Learning Express Library site.
  3. Describe the contents of the Learning Express Library.
  4. Understand how to register to use the ebooks and practice exams.
  5. Understand how to use the ebooks and tutorials.
  6. Demonstrate how to take a practice exam.
  7. Understand how to interpret the scoring system.

 

 

Literature Searching for Research (parts 1 & 2)

This class will review the basics of conducting literature searches for research projects in PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science, and other databases as time allows.  Come prepared to ask questions and kick start your next project!

Objectives:

  1. Understand the role of the literature review in the research process.
  2. Differentiate how searching for clinical questions is different than research questions.
  3. Run basic searches in at least 3 databases.

 

Managing Citations with EndNote: (Michael)

Citation managers are very powerful tools for busy researchers and clinicians, allowing them to build a repository of research citations that can be formatted according to the citation requirements of a variety of journals for publication or other purposes.  These tools save time for health professionals, by helping to keep research organized and formatted.  This class will cover getting set up with EndNote, and using it to organize research.

Objectives:

  1. Understand how to obtain EndNote and/or EndNote Web.
  2. Demonstrate how to set up a new EndNote library.
  3. Understand how to manually enter citations or import from databases.
  4. Understand how to use Cite While You Write feature in Word.
  5. Understand how to create, reformat, and export bibliographies.
  6. Understand how to back up and manage an EndNote library.

 

Preston Medical Library 101 (Kelsey)

An introduction to the resources and services available both physically and virtually to the Preston Medical Library community.

Objectives:

  1. Describe major information sources available in electronic and physical formats and how to locate them.
  2. List key services available for health professionals and consumers, including librarian assistance, literature reviews, document delivery, and patient health information services.
  3. Describe library location and physical facilities available for health professionals and consumers.
  4. List PML and HIC websites, contact information, online request forms, and opportunities for off campus access to materials.

 

PubMed Clinical Queries: Quick Searching for the Busy Clinician (Kelsey)

Clinical Queries, available from PubMed, provides easy searching for those interested in specific clinical research areas. This class will help you save time when it comes to clinical searching through the use of this tool.

Objectives:

  1. Define what PubMed Clinical Queries does.
  2. Identify when it is useful to the searcher.
  3. Formulate and run a search in PubMed Clinical Queries.

 

PubMed for Nurses (Martha)

Are you a nurse interested in searching PubMed? Then this class is for you! Designed specifically for nurses, this class explores how to search PubMed for results related to nursing.

Objectives:

  1. Explore key features of PubMed.
  2. Teach you how to construct a search in PubMed.
  3. How to filter your results.
  4. Allow you to evaluate the search results to see if they relate to your topic.

Uses of Literature and Reflective Writing in Healthcare 

This class will provide an overview regarding uses of literature and reflective writing for healthcare professionals, patients, family members, and caregivers. The role of narrative medicine in healthcare will also be addressed. Specific attention will be devoted to issues of burn-out and wellness. (Note: No writing assignments will be involved.)

Objectives:

  1. Gain knowledge of narrative medicine, literature, and reflective writing as important aspects of integrative healthcare.
  2. Learn about resources that will help apply knowledge gained in class.
  3. Improve skills that will help fulfill the hospital’s mission and values of providing quality care.

 

Using My NCBI in PubMed 

My NCBI, a feature of PubMed, will make your research easier.  Learn how to set up your account, highlight search terms, save searches, have search results periodically e-mailed to you, and save Clipboard items.

Objectives:

  1. Create a My NCBI account.
  2. Understand the difference between saving searches and collections.
  3. Be able to set up filters and highlighting.

 

Using the Library’s Electronic Collections: (Michael) 

This class is a very basic tutorial of the library’s electronic collections. 

Objectives:

  1. Learn how to search for electronic books, databases and journals
  2. Learn how to use the library's PubMed link to find full text articles.
  3. Learn how to sign up and use the Library's Off Campus Access
