Team Member Research Information Skills Certificate

The RISC certificate is designed for individual team members seeking to improve skills in researching, evaluating and managing information related to healthcare. The ongoing curriculum of courses offered by Preston Medical Library offers flexibility in the order and selection of courses to meet the requirement for certification.

 

This certificate is a valuable component of Nursing and Allied Health team member’s professional development, as each team member needs to be able to find and apply evidence in their day to day work at UT Medical Center. The certificate is a display of the employee’s accomplishment.  Employees with information skills training demonstrate their commitment to UT Medical Center’s mission.

 

Program Outline- Participants take three core courses followed by selected electives listed below. There are two levels of certificates. For Level 1 certificate, the employee may choose any three Level 1 electives, for Level 2 any two Level 2 electives

 

Core Courses (required prerequisite to electives)

  • Preston Medical Library 101
  • Introduction to Evidence Based Practice
  • Introduction to Searching:  PubMed OR  Introduction to Searching: CINAHL

Electives:

Level 1: To receive a Health Information Skills Certificate choose any three of the following classes:

  • Advanced Searching: CINAHL
  • Advanced Searching: PubMed
  • Business Searching for Health Professionals
  • Creating Presentation Posters Using PowerPoint
  • Literature Searching for Research
  • Managing Citations with EndNote
  • Mobile Apps for Health Professionals
  • PubMed Clinical Queries: Quick Searching for the Busy Clinician
  • PubMed for Nurses
  • Using MyNCBI in PubMed
  • Managing your citations for publications

Level 2: To receive Level 2 Health Information Skills Certificate, choose any two of the following classes:

  • Consumer Health Information on the Internet
  • Health Literacy: What You Need to Know
  • Literary Rounds: Where Medicine Mingles With the Muse
  • Use of Literature and Reflective Writing in Healthcare
