Appropriate and Inappropriate Resident Feedback

One of the most important roles of faculty is to give specific, helpful feedback comments to trainees.  While the evaluation questions and ratings cover the six competencies (Patient Care, Professionalism, Communication, Medical Knowledge, Practice Based Learning, System Based Practice), direct comments about how to improve is an important part of feedback.  When done well, feedback is extremely helpful; however, when inappropriate feedback is given, that can have an adverse effect on the resident.
