Emergency and Trauma Center

The Aeromedical Services (UT LIFESTAR) fleet of medical helicopters provides around-the-clock emergency aeromedical services and medical transport to patients in East Tennessee, Southeast Kentucky, Southwest Virginia, and Western North Carolina with staff consisting of pilots, nurses, paramedics, dispatchers and mechanics. Each helicopter is inspected and serviced daily.

The Emergency Department serves as a tertiary referral center for Knox County and 21 surrounding counties, treating more than 6,500 patients per month. As a Joint Commission Certified Comprehensive Stroke Center and Comprehensive Cardiac Center, specialized processes and teams are in place for initiating care for strokes and cardiac emergencies as well as other time-limited, life threatening emergencies.

The Medical Critical Care department provides comprehensive care for critically ill medical patients with a variety of diagnoses and complex treatments requiring close monitoring. The department is led by a multidisciplinary team of medical staff who focus on the treatment of clinical conditions such as respiratory failure, GI bleeding, renal disease, multisystem organ failure, and more.

The Neurocritical Care department is comprised of multidisciplinary medical staff offering state of the art care for patients with stroke, brain tumors, traumatic injuries, and other diseases and conditions of the brain and spine.

The Trauma Services facility resources are key to the care of the acutely injured patient and are available around the clock, every day of the year. Multidisciplinary support with ancillary services, also dedicated to the care of trauma patients, includes pharmacy, case management, nutrition, pastoral care, and rehabilitation services.

The Trauma Surgical ICU cares for critically injured patients with a dedicated team of providers to ensure optimal recovery for each patient, including trauma attendings, surgical critical care fellows, residents, advanced care practitioners, nurses, and ancillary staff.

Patient follow-up information will only be provided to those directly involved with the patient's care under compliance with state and federal rules and regulations.

Stop the Bleed is a free-to-the-public course offered by UTMC's Emergency & Trauma Center teaching bystanders simple actions to stop life-threatening blood loss while waiting for emergency responders. No prior medical knowledge is needed to take the course.
